Reel spools - types and uses
Fishing reel is one of many parts included in the basic equipment of each angler. Convenience of use, weight, and precise workmanship may be decisive in many trips to the water. Specialized construction, line length and built-in brake allow to maneuver the lure effectively and - thanks to the reserve of line - to cast it on long distances. The sum of the quality of individual elements influences the effects of fishing, as well as its attractiveness in terms of adventure.

Reels with a spool
They can be divided into two main subcategories: multipliers and fly reels. Each is characterized by a slightly different design, and thus different purpose. Some of them are based on solutions known for a long time, in case of others, modern production technology plays a key role.

Multipliers
The construction of a multiplier is based on well-known reels with a movable spool. Compared to them, the ones manufactured today are extremely advanced and precise devices with gear ratios of over 7:1. Another characteristic feature of them are star-type brakes - multi-disc, centrifugal, electronic or magnetic. Thanks to them it is possible to significantly reduce the speed of spool rotation at the initial stage of casting. Multipliers can also be differentiated into those that resemble a circle when looked at from the side (normal) and those that resemble a slightly flattened oval (low-profile). The first one is used for heavier lures, the second one for lighter ones. Multipliers are perfect for sea fishing, spinning (in case of big lures) and ground fishing. They are resistant and durable, that is why they bravely endure even the toughest conditions. Low-profile multipliers, on the other hand, are rather used for ultralight spinning, thanks to the great comfort of their use.

Fly reels
Characterized by a transverse axis to the long axis and an extremely simple design. These most popular fly reels are manufactured using either pressed or sintered materials, mainly widia (carbide). Many fly reels are not geared, which means that the spool rotates only once per crank revolution. A fly reel is usually equipped with a ratchet (or friction) brake and interchangeable spools.

Fixed spool reels
In this type of reel, the line is wound around the spool with a special bail. Cheaper models are made of plastic, more expensive ones of metals like aluminum and occasionally titanium. Special coatings are used to reduce friction. The possibility of changing spools for reels makes it easy to choose the one that works best at a given moment, mainly in terms of choosing the right line thickness. The biggest advantages of reels with fixed spools are: strength, corrosion resistance, spool capacity, gear ratio and a reliable drag.
