Picker rods - finesse groundbaits
The groundbait method is very popular and there is probably no angler who hasn't come across it at some point in their fishing adventure. Placing the lure at the bottom of a lake, pond or river is often the way to success. One cannot say, however, that this road is always easy. Ground methods that have been invented so far and those that are still being developed are a river subject. Today we will try to explore the secrets of one of the most delicate groundbaits - the picker. Its effectiveness is hidden in the precise way of signalling the bites, which is the well known and loved twitching tip.

The general outline of fishing with the twitching tip method
Oscillating tip rods (DS rods for short) come in many sizes and have different strength parameters, but what they all have in common is the sensitive tip, which acts as a strike indicator. To fish with the DS method one needs, apart from the rod, a reel, a large supply of medium thick monofilament and a properly composed end set, often equipped with a groundbait basket. Fishing with a twitching tip looks simple, but in order to catch fish effectively you need some practice, which you can get only by the water. We cast the rod, the loaded set sits on the bottom, we put the rod back on the supports, we tighten the line slightly so the tip of the rod bends a little - and we wait for a bite. The signals the rod tip gives us can be different, just like the way the fish takes the lure is different. We can observe gentle pulsations of the rod tip, barely perceptible vibrations, strong, rhythmic pulls or one decent move away, and each of these movements can be a signal to strike or a message that we have to wait for a certain take. Everything depends on the angler's experience and the specific situation: the fishery, the species of fish we are fishing for, and even the weather conditions - many times rain or wind interfere with the signals reaching us from under the water through the movements of the rod tip.

Varieties of the Twitching Tip method are, in order from the most delicate one: quiver, picker and feeder. The first ones are used for fishing up to around 30 metres from the shore with very light sets. Pickers give us the possibility of mounting a light groundbait basket and casting at longer distances. Feeder is the most flexible method - we can find models up to 60 g, but also up to 150 g and more. We should choose our rod model, especially its length and casting weight, according to the fishery and the fish we intend to catch.

How to choose a picker for yourself?
When shopping for a fishing rod our tastes and aesthetic considerations must give way to logic and thorough analysis of the conditions in which we want to use the new equipment. It is to these conditions that we choose our lines, reels and rods. Pickers are no exception here - the right model will have its action, power and length adjusted to the distance of the fish feeding ground from the shore, the type of the tank and the species of fish we want to target.

Rod size. Longer and shorter pickers.
The length of the rod is important for the quality of the cast and the distance at which we send our lure. If we need to cast far, at about 40-50 m. If we need to cast far, about 40-50 m. from the bank (far for the picker method), it is better to take a longer rod to the water. A shorter rod, even if it has a bigger casting weight, will not provide such precise and far casts. Pickers over 3.30 m are considered long. Similarly, for not very long casts we will use a rod 2.7-3m long. There are rarely any picker models shorter than 2.4m.

It is also worth considering that using a long picker extends the haul of the fish. Fast retrieve of the prey is easier with a short rod. We know, that a long haul tires the animal and decreases its chances for survival after the release, so let's pay attention to the welfare of our fish already while choosing the fishing equipment.

The universal length of a picker is considered to be 3.30 m. This is, according to some, the best compromise between the quality of casting and the safety of hauling.

The action of a picker type rod
As with all other types of rods, pickers also have different actions. Some anglers like models with a fast, top-end action in order to strike effectively at the perfect moment. Others think that a softer rod will be best, as it will allow them to haul larger specimens without any problems. As always, the truth is somewhere in between and the best place to start is to find a picker, which after a relatively fast jerk turns into a parabolic action. It is not easy to find such a model, but a little effort will surely bring satisfaction on the fishing ground.

Pickers and their casting weight
The casting weight of pickers is a rather limited subject. It has strictly defined limits, because it is the main parameter by which we know that the rod is a picker. A light picker has c.w. of about 10-30 g. The most common models are those with the maximum casting weight of around 20-40 g. Stronger models, with c.w. up to 60 g, may be considered by some specialists as delicate feeders. It should be remembered that the maximum c.w. value is usually given for the strongest rod from the set of interchangeable tips. If we use the more delicate ones, we have to be careful not to exaggerate with the load.

A two-piece picker, or maybe a telescope?
Many anglers believe that a telescopic rod is heavier and less durable than a cap-folded model. Sometimes there is a grain of truth in that, but nowadays, with such advanced technologies available to manufacturers of fishing equipment, telescopic poles have very good parameters and often are not inferior to their two-piece counterparts. The convenience of transporting the assembled rod is definitely in its favour.

What about using a picker rod for other methods?
Some spinning anglers deliberately use light and short pickers to fish for perch and other small predators. Indeed, a picker tip shows after all the gentlest tap on the lure. A picker with the hardest tip can also replace a float in an emergency.
