Carp fishing rod - a short guide how to choose it
Carp - the king of whitefish
Carp is a very popular fish that every angler knows. Those of us who prefer non-predatory species have certainly encountered it more than once. We usually catch carps weighing 1-3 kg. Larger specimens already require directing our efforts to this particular species. Big carps have sophisticated and hard to predict taste tastes, specific habits and favourite feeding places (usually such, where it is difficult to cast). These majestic powerhouses, which can squeeze the angler's heart out during the haul, are no match for any other tackle. Both reels and carp rods, as well as all other accessories marked "Carp" are high quality equipment with all the necessary conditions to tackle even a 20 kg specimen.

Carp anglers - positive nuts
Carp require a lot of sacrifices from anglers who are in love with them. Tens of kilograms of groundbait, days or even weeks of baiting, constant picking of equipment - these are the "attractions" that a keen carp angler has to take into account before every serious angling session. The amount of equipment needed for professional specimen fishing is also impressive. A well-equipped carp angler has in his collection specialised bite indicators, a rod pod or tripod (a comfortable stand for cast rods), a mat for safe keeping of a carp on the bank, but often also a fishfinder, a tent, a pontoon, a mini remote control boat for taking out sets and many other accessories whose purpose is completely unknown to a non-carp angler. Buying a few different rods and reels "just in case" is also a rule. Fans of moustached gourmets also throw a lot (sometimes whole buckets) of various kinds of food into the water to attract carp to the fishery. In order to ensure bites on the day of the sit-down, baiting the same spot should last at least a few days - then the giants will get used to feeding there and will be less suspicious. Real enthusiasts visit dozens of fisheries not only in the country, but also around the world to fight with their dream monster.
For those who are a bit scared by the prospect of such expenses and sacrifices (which is quite understandable), a good but inexpensive carp rod, a decent reel with a free spool gear and a spacious landing net will be enough to start with. Even if such a person decides that carp fishing doesn't suit him or her for some reason, such strong equipment will be useful when fishing other species, such as catfish. And maybe it will turn out that this is exactly what we were looking for in fishing? Adrenaline, a few days of expeditions into the unknown, electrifying buzzers piercing the night silence and wild, untamed element raging from the other side of the rod - these are just some of the charms of carp fishing. It is definitely worth trying, so...

What rod will be the best for carp?
"The heart of all carp fishing equipment is always a rod. The carp adventure begins with it, so it's worth thinking carefully about this issue to make the best choice. Fortunately, the wealth of models on the market today is able to satisfy the needs of every angler, so all you have to do is look carefully.

Different carp rods for different occasions
Before buying a carp rod, it is worth initially determining where and how we intend to fish for our specimens. We will need a different rod on a large, wild lake and a different one on a pond. It is also important how far we will cast and from what distance we tow the fish. Or maybe we should give up casting altogether and fish from the so called haul-out, i.e. taking our set on the boat to the middle of the fishing spot? If you have the possibility of placing the lure in the fishery in such a way, it is worth using it, because traditional casting is not always 100% precise.

Fishing rods for carp - length
The first thing we think about when evaluating any rod is its length. This parameter is the most important when we are going to cast the lure traditionally and not take it out to the fishery. If we anticipate that we will have to cast for long distances (over 100m), the right model will be a long carp rod - about 4 m. Even a short, 3 m rod can be used for casting, but a long rod will work just as well.

The length of the rod also depends on whether we are going to tow carp from the bank or from a boat (it is a convenient way if we hook a really big animal). On a boat a short rod will be more useful - it is handy and we don't have to lead the fish along a particular path, e.g. between hooks - we just pull it towards us. A long rod is invaluable during a long distance haul, when we need as much control as possible over a giant raging on the hook.

Carp rods - the deflection curve
Another characteristic feature of carp rods is the so called deflection curve, which is often confused with the casting weight, although it is a completely different matter. The deflection curve is counted in English pounds (abbreviated as "lb" or "lbs, a pound is about 0.454 kg). This parameter tells us under what load the rod will bend in such a way that a right angle is formed between the line of the butt cap and the line of the line coming out of the tip. In short, it defines the rod's resistance to carp. On the market we can find carp rods with a deflection curve from 2.5 lb to 4 lb, and the first ones are the most delicate. If we are going to fish in a fishery with hooks and cast at long distances, it is better to choose a stronger rod - with a bigger deflection curve.

Carp rod and the casting weight
The casting weight of carp rods is usually specified in grams. It is the maximum weight of our set that we are going to cast. The choice of the rod with this casting weight depends mainly on the fishery and the distance we want to cast our set. In the case of carp rods, this range is from 25 to 140 grams, although some specialist models may exceed these limits.

A rod for carp - the number of sections
Carp rods are available in two- or three-section versions. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. Two-piece rods are definitely stronger and more comfortable to fish with, but their transport length is not very convenient for many people. If we want to save ourselves some transport problems and we are not hunting for 20-kilogram carp, it is better to choose a three-piece rod.
