Ground baits for carp - what to use for carp?
Latin name - Carassius carassius

Polish record - 4.1 kg, 54 cm, caught by Mr Artur Popiński in 2014.

Carp in the world - Due to the fact that carp are caught all over Europe, very often on heavily fed commercial tanks, our national record is quite controversial. Not so long ago the largest carp in Europe was a 3.6 kg crucian carp caught by Mr. Sporlein in Germany in 2005. Our record-breaking fish is half a kilo heavier and many anglers on international forums deny the real value of Artur's record. However, it does not change the fact that the record of 4.1 kg is considered official and is another reason to be proud of Polish anglers.

Golden carps are more valued in the world. In many fishing publications, we can see goldfish caught by the greatest anglers. Silver crucian carp is neglected, but our anglers don't mind that at all. Maybe that is why Poles catch the biggest fish of this species?

Carp is a very popular fish in Polish waters. There are two types of them - silver, which has thousands of nicknames depending on the place where it is fished, and golden, which is much rarer and more desirable prey than its silver brother.

Silver carp live in most Polish waters and are the target of many anglers' expeditions. Golden crucian carp are less common, and can usually be found in line fisheries, on lakes, lagoons and other bodies of water that also correspond to tench. Their diet is very similar to that of tench and they thrive in overgrown parts of reservoirs. So it's no wonder that carp baits are very often also baits for tench. If we manage to choose the carp fishery accurately, we can be sure that somewhere there is also a tench.

Ground bait for carp - sweet or spicy?
Redfish have 'sweet tongues' but they don't avoid slightly spicy accents and the typical tench aroma of red worm can be very effective. Producers of carp groundbaits try to combine these elements in their baits, so that the bait attracts the attention of even capricious carps.

Feeding and dosing carp groundbait
There is one thing you should remember about. The shape of the common carp's mouth clearly suggests that it is a fish that often eats food above its head. Of course, there are many cases of catching crucian carp "from the bottom", but in many cases its bites take place in the depths, and very often just under the surface of the water. Here we see an important tip in the context of using groundbait for carp. Just like in case of tench we can assume that it will be close to the bottom and we put groundbait there, in case of carp the way of baiting should be much more universal. The carp groundbait should be fed in such a way that it covers the whole vertical distance from the bottom to the water surface. The crucian carp often change their feeding depth, so the groundbait should crash near the surface and calmly sink leaving the food vertical in the depths.

It is very important to dose the food sensibly. Common carp feed very well when they are served with frequent, but modest doses of carp bait. When they feed near the surface you can hear characteristic clicks and it is a sign that you are on your way to catching common carp. Very often you can see golden 'rings' collecting food from the surface, and then diving towards the bottom. They are very mobile, so let's remember to feed the common carp with groundbait without unnecessary long breaks, but often, regularly and quite modestly.

The point is to stimulate the fish's need to compete for food. Covering the bottom with tons of groundbait won't help.

When going for crucian carp we should remember to take a few different types of lures, as crucian carp like to be capricious, as well as appropriate bait for crucian carp to attract their attention all the time.
