Amur bait - what and how?
Latin name - Ctenopharyngodon idella

Polish record - 39.2 kg, 132 cm, caught by Mr. Krzysztof Ławnicki in 1998

World curiosity - Amur can be very difficult to catch, even for experienced hunters. Matt Hayes and Mick Brown found out about it during the filming of "The Great Rod Race". They had a list of the species of fish they wanted to catch in the British Isles and the grass carp caused them a lot of trouble. They tried to catch at least one with the surface method, but it was not easy at all. Amur has a smaller mouth than carp and sucks the lure differently, which resulted in a series of wasted bites and frustration of fishing celebrities. After one of the "boxes", Mick Brown furiously hit his cap on the ground that he tripped over his own armchair, then fell on the "counter" and was hit with a foot on the head. Matt Hayes laughed so much that he fell to the ground, and poor Mick Brown, knowing how terribly he had embarrassed himself, started laughing at himself. It was one of the most comical situations in the history of Hayes and Brown's journeys together, and they both remember it to this day. Eventually, they managed to catch the grass carp and then they were happy like little children.

Amur - a fish with a hint of mystery
Amur is one of the most mysterious fish that we can catch in Polish waters. Despite the fact that we know so much about them, there are still few anglers who can boast the skills that allow them to catch grass carp on a regular basis.

It is related to the characteristics and feeding method of grass carp.

Years of observation and experience were needed to prepare a suitable grass bait. It was necessary to listen to many anglers and analyze their opinions.

It turned out that grass carp reacted to the ingredients of the groundbait so far used for carp and tench fishing. Amura bait must be presented in a completely different way, however.

In the case of carp and tench, we will most often look for them at the bottom, creating a groundbait "carpet" in which we will place our bait and wait for a bite.

In the case of amur, this tactic rarely works.

This is due to the fact that grass carp very often lives in the higher parts of the water, looking for young reed shoots, grasses and other delicate parts of plants on which it feeds. So provoking him to go down to the bottom becomes quite difficult.

Amur bait must therefore be used in places where there are grasslands and at a depth that corresponds to our potential prey.

Where should I put amura groundbait?
How to find such a place and how to determine the optimal feeding depth of grass carp?

Amurs are large fish. Very often their presence can be easily observed. Due to the fact that there is no predator among other fish species that would be a threat to them, they often forage in visible, easily visible and accessible places for anglers. So let's take the time and, before we start fishing, let's assess where the optimal place for fishing will be.

Preparation of amur groundbait
What to do to make our amura groundbait effective? If we have devoted the right amount of time to observation, we have determined where and at what depth the grass carp are moving and we have chosen the place to fish, we can prepare amur groundbait. We must remember its consistency. Its purpose is to attract fish in the depths, spread a scent that will attract them and lead them to the point where the bait is located. Amur moves because it needs a large amount of food to meet its daily energy requirements. Therefore, we can spread our groundbait on an area of several or even several square meters, remembering to concentrate the largest amount of it in places where our baits are located.

The role of the grass bait is not to introduce hundreds of fish into feeding. Due to the size and limited number of grass carp (unless we fish on ponds full of grass carp), it rather aims to lead the fish to a path that will inevitably lead them to our lures.

If we approach fishing with the right tactics, take the time to observe and consistently create an odor and food path for grass carp, using grass carp bait, the results will undoubtedly appear.

Thanks to the use of grass carp bait and the right tactics, soon your view of grass carp fishing will be much more positive.
